I had the great pleasure of spending an afternoon with Garth Stein, the author of The Art of Racing in the Rain. I have been doing some editorial photography for Pup Culture Magazine, and although I have done editorial work before, this was the first time I had been sent alone. I am not overly extroverted. I tend to internalize and think through things as I shoot, so going to a famous authors house to get some shots of him and his dog, and having to remember to chat it up a bit, was going to be a bit of a new challenge for me.
His house is situated on a beautiful chunk of land overlooking one of our awesome lakes. Knocking on his door, my mind drew a blank. What the hell was I going to talk about that every other person hadn’t asked him 1000 times? He opened the door, his friendly face and super friendly dog, Comet, made me feel right at ease.
We spent a couple of hours shooting in his house, his yard, a great park that overlooked the lake and finally down to the lake at a vacant dock. The weather couldn’t have been better as we talked about our families, our dogs, and what it was like to be a famous author. It was a great first experience out on my own, on behalf of a magazine, and I think I lucked out with this feature. Here are a few other images from the shoot. A big thanks to Garth and Comet for being such great subjects to photograph. I’ll definitely be in line for his next book when it is released.
